Logistical doubts over Obama’s Varanasi visit

Varanasi: U.S. President Barack Obama may include Varanasi in his itinerary during his visit next month as chief guest at the Republic Day parade.

Though officials in Lucknow and Varanasi are still clueless, Acting U.S. Ambassador Kathleen Stephens’ recent visit to the ancient city points to the possibility.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keen on Mr. Obama visiting his Lok Sabha constituency on January 27, but U.S. authorities have two major concerns: the small size of the Babatpur (Varanasi) airport that would not be able to handle the logistics for Air Force One — the President’s official plane — and the congested topography of the city that has seen terror attacks, government sources said.

With Air Force One, a mammoth Boeing 747-200B being too big for the small airport, Mr. Obama would have to travel as Mr. Modi does to his constituency — take an IAF aircraft to the airport and then use a helicopter to land in the city, sources said.

Though Ms. Stephens had official engagements, including a stop-over at the Dashashwamedh Ghat to attend the Ganga aarti, her trip, just a day after Mr. Modi’s visit on December 25, raised eyebrows in the State

Indian culture helped me win title: Miss America

“The fact that I am rooted in Indian culture helped me win Miss America pageant,” said Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri.

Ms. Davuluri had floored her judges and the audience at the pageant by performing a Bollywood classical fusion dance on a peppy Hindi film song.

Self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings and Ms. Davuluri is a shining example of it. Clad in a heavily-embroidered chaniya choli, she had swayed with great confidence showcasing her Indian moorings on the international platform.

She is currently in the city to be with her extended family for the first time after winning the pageant. “My last visit to Vijayawada city was in 2009. The city has changed a lot but people are the same, warm and affectionate,” she said at a press conference here. She considers 2014 ‘very fortunate’ as it brought her the coveted title.

Referring to her Vijayawada connection, she said, “As a child, I learnt classical dance here.” Asked if she would take a plunge in films like many other beauty queens, Ms. Davuluri said she was not interested in movies. “I want to keep myself engaged in service to society, especially in the field of women empowerment,” she said.
